This in-depth video series reveals key aspects of the production workflow and mix techniques of Jay-Z's right-hand man, described by WSJ as “the most successful engineer in the history of hip-hop”. Young Guru explains how he searches for sounds, samples them from records, and maps them to drum machines and controllers. He shares details of how he created the loop that sparked the process of building an entire track for the artist Voli Contra. Using an Akai MPC and Ableton Push integrated with Live, he demonstrates a number of approaches and features that are essential to his beat-making process. After a deep dive into the Ableton Live production session, Young Guru opens the Pro Tools mix session to show you how he refined the parts to finish the record!

Malay producing a track at Studio La Fabrique
Full video available exclusively on https://mwtm.org/pat2 We're delighted to bring you another series with the immensely talented producer Malay! Filmed at his memorable 2019 seminar, this documents the process of him recording, producing, and performing on the song 'Them' by singer-songwriter Iris. Malay speaks of the project's origins and inspiration, then explains how he wishes to develop it emotionally, musically, and sonically. He records a simple guide track, then gets to work on building a soundscape of modulating synth lines, atmospheric guitar sounds, lush organ, heavily distorted drums, and more. He describes how the drums were tracked prior at Larrabee Studios, sharing his microphone techniques and preferences. All other parts are recorded at Studios La Fabrique, then creatively processed using a variety of plug-ins to apply drastic tonal, dynamic, and time-based manipulation. You'll witness how Malay builds a production quickly and impulsively by incorporating his unique workflow, empathising with the artist, and experimenting freely!

Speaking amongst themselves and addressing questions from participants, Dave Pensado and Jaycen Joshua discuss a number of elements that have been paramount to their illustrious careers. They elaborate on psychological, technical, and logistical factors, from handling clients and maximizing efficiency to enhancing perceived loudness. The two reveal some of their favorite mix techniques and refer to instances on projects when they’ve reached both positive and negative outcomes. They impart a great deal of knowledge gained from working with highly skilled artists, producers, and mastering engineers, being honest about lessons learned from their successes and failures.

Jaycen Joshua & Dave Pensado - Production Seminar #4 | Trailer
Full video available exclusively on https://mwtm.org/ps4 Filmed at Studios La Fabrique in France, this in-depth series uncovers a number of innovative mix techniques used regularly by Dave Pensado and Jaycen Joshua. While the majority comprises discussion and demonstration by Jaycen, there are many moments of insight into Dave’s approach too. The engineers reminisce on their time working as a team and the learning curves they went through. Joshua plays excerpts of some of their favorite-sounding records by Nine Inch Nails, Blackstreet, The Roots, Busta Rhymes, and more. Upon critical listening, the pair comment on what they love about the mixes and why they’re a benchmark for their own aspirations. Jaycen opens multiple Pro Tools sessions to show his work on projects by Ed Sheeran, Poo Bear, Juanes ft. Sebastián Yatra, and Meek Mill ft. Drake. He goes into great detail on handling gain structure in a way that enables maximum perceived loudness and punchy transients without audible distortion. You’ll see how he uses a variety of tools including stereo imagers, dynamic equalisers, multi-band compressors, harmonic enhancers, reverbs, and delays. This is a gold mine of information packed into a couple of hours!
